Two weeks after her disappearance, a student from Mexico was found dead in the Berlin district of Adlershof. A passer-by noticed a body floating in the Teltow Canal near Altglienicker Bridge in the afternoon and alerted the police and fire brigade, the police said. According to current knowledge, no third-party fault can be assumed. The criminal police are still investigating the background, said a police spokeswoman on Sunday.
The 24-year-old had been missing since July 22. According to the police, she had left her apartment that day and had not returned. “There are indications that the 24-year-old is in an exceptional psychological situation,” the police report said. The international police agency Interpol had also issued a missing persons report, a “yellow note”.
According to their own statements, the Berlin police recently had almost 120 clues about the disappearance of the young woman. Friends and acquaintances had been looking for the 24-year-old. They had distributed leaflets and put up posters around the city, walked through parks or forests and checked out train stations.
Solidarity with the student’s family
Only on Saturday afternoon did numerous people in Berlin show their solidarity with the student’s family. In the presence of the 24-year-old’s parents, they lit candles and placed them on the steps of the Mexican embassy in the capital. Some people had given short speeches. Ambassador Francisco Quiroga also spoke to the people and lit a candle. According to the police, around 250 people had gathered in front of the embassy in the Tiergarten.
“We accompany her family in this difficult and painful moment with respect and solidarity. We stand by her side,” Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena wrote on Twitter. “We will continue to investigate what happened. Our deepest condolences.”
The young woman’s family thanked her in a statement for her support and solidarity. “We ask that you respect our daughter’s memory, our pain and our privacy,” the letter said.
