An unlikely couple who fall in love and, despite external adversities, are happy in the end: These are the ingredients for countless romantic comedy films – romcoms for short. “Red, White and Royal Blue” is no exception. The film runs from Friday (11.8.) on Amazon Prime Video.

Queer stories are no longer uncommon, especially not on streaming services. Teen series like “Heartstopper” and “Young Royals” deal with young love between non-heterosexual couples with a good pinch of lightness. “Red, white and royal blue” isn’t too tense, but it’s extremely humorous in many places.

Plot

The politically ambitious son of US President Alex (Taylor Zakhar Perez, “The Kissing Booth”) and the young British Prince Henry (Nicholas Galitzine, “Purple Hearts”) have had a love-hate relationship for years. Alex thinks the blond Brit is “snobby”, he thinks the American sunny boy is “rude”. When both meet at events, things usually don’t end well – like the “cake disaster” that the media dubbed.

But over time, the two men, who are under a lot of pressure of expectations, get to know each other better and they realize that feelings are involved. A first bold kiss, a short shock and a wild affair follow. But after the publication of intimate chats, the Prince of Wales in particular has to decide: between love and royal tradition.

Cheesy and hilariously funny

Theater director Matthew López’s comedy, based on Casey McQuiston’s 2019 debut novel, is often cheesy and at times hilarious. For example, when the US President (Uma Thurman), who is about to be re-elected, wants to enlighten her adult son about anal sex.

The two-hour flick isn’t exactly realistic, but it convinces above all with the chemistry between Alex and Henry. The audience builds an emotional bond with the unlikely couple and hopes that the British king (Stephen Fry) will understand and give the young love his blessing. It would be a real romcom happy ending.
