The hot weather warning has been issued for the Bay Area, so residents of Santa Clara County need to be prepared. The extreme heat can lead to heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially for children, older adults, and individuals with underlying health conditions. Dana Reed, the Director of Emergency Management for Santa Clara County, emphasized the importance of taking precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Here are some hot weather safety tips:
– Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
– Avoid physical activity during the hottest part of the day.
– Check on elderly or frail individuals regularly.
– Never leave people or pets in a closed, parked car.
– Stay in air-conditioned areas when possible.
– Take a cool bath or shower to lower your body temperature.
– Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing.
– Protect your head with a hat or umbrella when outside.
– Use sunscreen and sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes.
– Rest in shaded areas to cool down.

To provide relief from the heat, the County libraries are operating as Cooling Centers. Residents can visit these locations to cool off in an air-conditioned environment. Additionally, San Jose libraries are open during regular business hours for community members.
