The two German Bundesliga clubs have been assigned more or less solvable tasks in the group stage of the Europa League. It could have been much more difficult for Bayer 04 Leverkusen: Last season’s semi-finalists only had to deal with outsiders in Group H. The Werkself have to play against FK Karabakh Agdam from Azerbaijan, FK Molde from Norway and BK Häcken from Sweden, according to the draw in Monaco on Friday.
SC Freiburg, on the other hand, meets Conference League winners West Ham United from the Premier League. In addition, the team of coach Christian Streich has to play against Olympiacos Piraeus again. The Breisgauers had to play against the Greek record champions last season in the second highest European division, in which they failed in the round of 16 at Juventus Turin. The group is completed by FK TSC Backa Topola from Serbia.
The group stage of the Europa League starts on September 21st. The final will take place on May 22nd at the Dublin Arena in Ireland. Eintracht Frankfurt won the Europa League in 2022, this year record winner FC Sevilla.
