At least two people died in floods after heavy rains in the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said several were injured. The evening before, there had been torrential rain in two districts in the north of the city in Istanbul. Roads turned into raging rivers and cars were swept away by the floods, pictures showed.
Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu said several people were evacuated from a city library after water entered the building. He emphasized that Turkey had to prepare for further extreme weather events as a result of climate change.
Two people died on Tuesday after a storm in western Turkey near the border with Greece and Bulgaria. The heavy rains follow a dry summer with record heat in Turkey. The water reservoirs in the 16-million metropolis of Istanbul are at their lowest level since the same period in 2014.
