Removed from the political life, François Hollande, is now classified as a pro-democracy activist. Interviewed by the Italian daily Corriere de la Sera (the interview should be published Tuesday, June 9), the former president of the Republic underlines that “the life is full of sollicitiations but also unexpected”. “As for me, I served my country and I consider myself as a pro-democracy activist”, he says as he responds to a question about his future. “I stayed consistent with the values in which I believed from my earliest age, I put them in tune with the changing times. I can’t separate myself from this civil commitment that has informed my life and to which I remain and will remain faithful”, he adds.

2017, an election special
Concerning his successor, François Hollande stressed the “particular context” of the election of Emmanuel Macron : “I was not a candidate and the right was represented by a personality that was discredited by the scandals. His victory is more a rejection of the presidency of the extreme right and not a membership to his program.”

According to him, the current head of the State “would have been able to take the best advantage of this political situation original, but it has not done so. He has built or a new political force or a coalition. His position was that the parties no longer had a role to play in democratic life. Now, his own party is devoid of any local presence. We can measure it in the next municipal elections. For my part I think that without political parties, without active organization of citizens, there is no true democracy”.
“Change our way of life”
About the epidemic of Covid-19, François Hollande believes that “neither globalization, nor the human factor” are the origin, and it must not neglect the planet. “It is also true that climate change may have future consequences even more dramatic. We need to change deeply our ways of life”, he thinks.

François Hollande has welcomed the decision taken by the european Union, “for the first time, to allocate an additional budget for the recovery and accelerate the process of convergence of budgetary policies”.
