The alert was given : a dangerous Nile crocodile lurking for several days in the river Pisuerga, near the city of Valladolid, in the north-west of Spain. The animal was spotted by several onlookers over the course of the weekend. This reptile, which can reach up to 6 meters in length in adulthood, and living usually in Africa, has the reputation of attacking humans.
Francisco Sánchez, a police officer of the city of Simancas, has been able to see the animal last Saturday. “It was a crocodile, which measured between 1.5 and 2 meters “, he said to the british newspaper the Guardian. “I saw it move in the water before he disappeared under the surface. I’ve never been so close to a crocodile before, and it was been captured. “The local authorities have mobilized police officers and specialists of the wildlife to find the reptile. Boats and drones have been used to carve up the area, but, at the present time, the beast is still not found. In the meantime, the inhabitants of the towns of Simancas and Tordesillas were asked to stay away from the river.

A first track which led to… an otter
As the tells BFMTV, a nest resembling that of a crocodile has been discovered, and could lead to the animal. But it was ultimately a nest of otters, evidenced by the droppings and leftover food left behind. In the opinion of the police, the crocodile was kept by someone in a house, before being released when it has reached a certain size. As noted by the Guardian, Nile crocodiles kill about 200 people each year. Caution is therefore always necessary for the inhabitants of the region.
