Northern Peru was hit by a “major” earthquake of magnitude 7.5. There were some minor injuries and damage to homes.
According to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, (EMSC), the tremor took place in a remote area of the Amazon rainforest about 45 kilometres northwest from Barranca.
It was strong but it was also very deep underground at 110 km. This allows for less damage and casualties, but it causes tremors to be felt over a greater area.
Ecuadorean authorities confirmed that the quake was felt by 19 of the 24 provinces. The EMSC also received numerous accounts from individuals who felt minor quakes in Colombia (more than 1,000km away from the epicenter).
According to the US Tsunami Warning System, there is no tsunami after the earthquake.
