A student was killed in an attack at a school in the Brazilian metropolis of São Paulo. Three more victims were injured, as the government of the state of the same name announced on the X platform (formerly Twitter).
A 15-year-old student entered the school and opened fire, the news portal “G1” reported, citing the Secretariat for Public Security. The motive for the fatal attack was initially unclear. It is the second attack on a school in the city of São Paulo. A teacher was killed in a knife attack in March.
The state’s governor, Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, expressed his condolences to the families and all those affected. “We are dismayed by another horrific attack on our schools,” de Freitas said via X. The suspected shooter was arrested by the police and the murder weapon was seized.
An attack on two schools in the east of Brazil in November last year with three deaths and an attack on a daycare center in the south of the country with four deaths this year also caused horror. Compared to other countries, such attacks are rare in Latin America’s largest country.
Brazil is one of the countries with the most violent crime. But most of them are due to organized crime, petty criminals and police violence.
