Ajax Amsterdam has parted ways with coach Maurice Steijn after the worst start to the season in the club’s history. This was announced by the Dutch football record champions. It was said that an agreement had been reached with the 49-year-old to separate.
“We have come to the conclusion that this is the best thing for Ajax, although I regret that,” Steijn was quoted as saying. Initially, Steijn’s previous assistant Hedwiges Maduro will act as head coach. Ajax have only recorded one win in the Eredivisie. The day before, the team lost 3:4 against FC Utrecht.
With just five points from seven games, Ajax is in second-to-last place in the Eredivisie, and the club is still winless in the Europa League. There was a big upheaval in the Amsterdam team in the summer. Around a dozen new players came for over 100 million euros, and in return the club also earned 150 million euros through player transfers.
Danny Blind returns to the Ajax supervisory board
The club parted ways with then sports director Sven Mislintat at the end of September. It was also about a possible conflict of interest in the transfer of former Stuttgart player Borna Sosa to Amsterdam.
It was not until 2022 that the multiple European Cup winner won the last of a total of 36 championship titles. Ajax was also a regular guest in the Champions League for years, and in 2019 the club was in the semi-finals.
The club also announced that former star defender Danny Blind is returning to the Ajax supervisory board. The 62-year-old, who once won the Champions League with Ajax as a player and later became head coach, was suggested by Louis van Gaal. Former bond coach van Gaal has been working at Ajax in an advisory role since the beginning of October.
