The 1,000 Masters in Rome turned towards the unexpected. Novak Djokovic, after several months in the shadows after his refusal to be vaccinated against Covid, returned to the front page by taking the Italian tournament. He defeated the Serbian in the final against Stefanos Tsitsipas and secured until further notice to be number one in the world. The Greek, despite the defeat, rises to number four. Alcaraz, absent after his bite in Madrid, was not there, and Rafa Nadal added another bump in his season by being again affected by the chronic injury that has haunted him since 2005.
The Mallorcan slows down slightly in the ATP ranking, from number three to five, closely followed by the Murcian, who already occupies sixth position.
The podium, along with Djokovic, is completed by the Russian Daniil Medvedev and the German Alexander Zverev. All this at the gates of the second major tournament of the season, Roland Garros, which will open its doors on May 22.
