Lake Garda, Italy, hosts from tomorrow, Tuesday, May 17, the European Championship of the new iQFoil Olympic class, with the participation of fourteen Spanish sailors, eight of them belonging to the national pre-Olympic team.
Among the women, in addition to Pilar Lamadrid and Nicole van der Velden, pre-Olympics, Blanca Manchón, Julia Gómez Roa, Bárbara Winau and Andrea Torres participate. In the men’s category, the starters Ángel Granda, Fernando Lamadrid, Joan Carles Cardona, Jorge Aranzueque, Tomás Vieito and Bernat Tomás, are joined by José Luis Boronat and Santiago Costa.
In accordance with the pre-Olympic regulations of the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation, participation in international regattas such as the European and World Championships is important for sailors who aspire to represent Spain at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Now immersed in the First Cycle of these regulations, the results obtained in these international events in 2022 and in the Princess Sofia Trophy in 2023 will be the ones that mark the composition of the national team during the Second Cycle.
The regattas will last until next Sunday, May 22, with the dispute of a qualifying series and a final series that will give access to the ten best classified, in the male and female categories, to the Medal Series. The first of the final series will directly access the final regatta of the Medal Series, in which they will face the first two of the resulting table of quarterfinals and semifinals.
Wind forecasts point to intensities above 20 knots at the start of the championship, which will drop to an average of 15 knots on Wednesday, to rise again to 20 knots during the rest of the days of competition.
