The XXXV National Churro Sheep Cattle Fair will turn Palencia on June 4 and 5 into the epicenter of knowledge about this breed, hand in hand with a program made up of multiple activities and locations. Among others, there will be open-air concerts, presentations, gastronomic terraces, debates or a herd through the streets of the capital until reaching the Plaza de la Inmaculada.
Halfway between face-to-face and virtual, the event will have four locations: the Regional Livestock Market, which will be used exclusively for the location and exhibition of the batches of animals submitted to the competition; next to it is the Campa Churra, dedicated to live music and tasting of Food from Palencia and PGI Lechazo from Castilla y León; the Provincial Cultural Center and the Plaza de la Inmaculada.
It aims to be the loudspeaker of the churra sheep’s quality products, the showcase of the sheep and the work carried out throughout the year and the vindication of a lifestyle of many centuries.
«For 35 years, churro sheep farmers have valued the churra breed, always under the same philosophy. Our breed and our farmers are a priority and their work and tenacity must be reflected in the great quality that the Churra Breed provides, both for its milk and for its meat”, highlighted the president of ANCHE, Mariano Paramio.
Paramio asked the administrations to get more involved so that farms do not disappear from the sector, and to do so with greater involvement in technology to reduce labor costs, in addition to implementing strategies to guarantee the difficult conciliation in this livestock sector.
During the presentation of the event in the courtyard of the Palacio Provincia, the president of the Provincial Council, Ángeles Armisén, assured that “society is increasingly aware, especially since the health crisis, of the importance of livestock for the future of a country”. In addition, she made it clear that the institution “works for and for the rural environment”, which is why she pointed out that they will continue working on the conservation and improvement of the Churra breed, “as a brand and identity of our land.”
The fair will begin on Saturday, June 4, first thing in the morning and thanks to the Diputación de Palencia, with the Agropopular radio program, which will be held live from the Regional Livestock Market. A little later, the Provincial Cultural Center will host the presentation ‘The ODS, an opportunity for the livestock sector’, given by CEO Omawa Ecological Footprint, Andrés Ferrer.
Several conferences will follow by experts such as José A. Reque Kilchenmann, Almudena Gómez or Federico Vasquetto. On the other hand, ‘Don’t confuse Churras with Merinas’ will be one of the most impressive events and will be held for the first time in Spain, thanks to the support of the Palencia City Council. The twinning between the Churra Breed and the Merino Breed, two unique native breeds in Spain, will be carried out. On Sunday, June 5, all activities will be at the Livestock Market.
