The main parallel section of the 75th Cannes Film Festival was “Un Certain Regard”, which went to Friday, May 27, to the French film “Les Pires” (Lise Akoka, Romane Gueret).
Valeria Golino, the jury’s chair, chose the film because it depicts a wild casting in Boulogne-sur-Mer in Pas-de-Calais. The film, which will be shown in French theaters on November 12, is a mix of reality and fiction. It required extensive immersion and the interaction of hundreds of children.
Romane Gueret and Lise Akoka, were both co-directors. They had previously worked with children in casting and coaching for films. This experience informed the film. Their web series, “You prefer”, was shot by Arte.
The jury award went to “Joyland”, a film by Saim Sadiq from Pakistan. It was the first Pakistani film that was shown at Cannes. Romanian Alexandru Belc won the Best Director award for “Metronom”.
Two performers share the award for best performance: Vicky Krieps from Luxembourg for her role in “Corsage”, and Adam Bessa for his role in “Corsage”. Ali is a young Tunisian living on contraband gasoline that he bought on a little bit of sidewalk in “Harka.”
Maha Haj won Best Screenplay for her Palestinian film, “Mediterranean Fever”. “Rodeo”, a Frenchwoman Lola Quivoron’s first feature film, was about a gang made up of marginal bikers. She left with a consolation prize, the “coup du coeur du jury”.
