BERLIN — On Wednesday, a man drove his car into pedestrians in Berlin’s shopping district. He killed at least one person, and injured at least eight others. Rescue services reported that the driver was identified as a man.

Thilo Cablitz, a police spokesperson said that the man crashed into several people on a street corner around 10:30 am. Then, he got the car back onto the road before hitting a window in a nearby shop.

Stefan Salzwedel, spokesperson for the fire service, stated that eight people were injured. According to police, more than a dozen people were hurt. Police stated that several were in critical condition.

Cablitz stated that the driver was initially detained by passersby, before being quickly arrested by a nearby police officer. Cablitz said that police are investigating whether the driver intentionally drove into pedestrians, or whether it was an accident possibly due to a medical emergency.

He stated that he did not have any additional information about the man who was driving a small vehicle or what if anything he had told police.

Numerous rescue vehicles and first responders arrived on the scene.

It occurred at the Kurfuerstendamm shopping avenue and near the Breitscheidplatz square. In 2016, an extremist attacked a Christmas market with a vehicle, resulting in 13 deaths.
