At Volkswagen’s electric car factory in Zwickau, part of production is once again being scaled back. The reason was a lack of engines, said a company spokesman when asked. They are sourced from the factory in Kassel. However, fewer of the required electric motors are currently being produced there due to disruptions in the supply chain, it said. Volkswagen wants to secure the ramp-up of the ID.7 model in Emden so that the engines are delivered there preferentially – to check the Zwickau location.
VW only throttled the production of electric cars in Saxony for two weeks in October. The move was justified at the time by weakening demand. The new production break was scheduled to begin on Thursday with the late shift. The production line for the ID.4, ID.5 and two Audi models will then be shut down for around three weeks. Production of the ID.3 and the Cupra Born is reportedly continuing. According to the company, around 1,500 employees are affected. Further training measures are planned for them, among other things. The “Freie Presse” had previously reported on the move.
