The injured man died in hospital after a police officer fired a shot during an operation in Delmenhorst. The 25-year-old is said to have attacked the police officer with an ax on the evening of November 20th, whereupon the police officer fired. The man’s body is scheduled for an autopsy on Monday. The investigators said it was still unclear when the autopsy results would be known. The relatives of the person who died on Sunday are being cared for.

According to previous investigations, there was initially a dispute in an apartment building on November 20th in which the 25-year-old was involved. A resident of the house called 911. The 25-year-old is said to have gotten an ax from his apartment and left the house. According to witnesses, he hit a car with an ax in the parking lot of a fashion store. When the police arrived, the rioter suddenly attacked the 27-year-old officer with the ax, whereupon the police officer used his firearm, it said.

The police immediately provided emergency care and resuscitation to the seriously injured man. He was taken to a hospital in an ambulance. The 25-year-old was being investigated for an assault on police officers.

The Cloppenburg/Vechta police station, under the direction of the Oldenburg public prosecutor’s office, has taken over the investigation because an officer from Delmenhorst is involved. It is now being examined whether he has committed a criminal offense by using firearms. Police officers are only allowed to use their weapons in extreme situations. The reasons are usually self-defense or to protect someone in danger. According to the public prosecutor’s office, suspicion of manslaughter is being investigated after the 25-year-old’s death.
