“Today, thousands in Berlin are demonstrating their solidarity with the courageous women and protesters in Iran,” wrote Family Minister Lisa Paus (Greens) on Twitter. “We stand by your side.”

At the rally, participants carried posters from the “Women Life Freedom” initiative, which had called for the rally. Many Kurdish flags could also be seen. According to the police spokesman, the demonstration was mostly trouble-free. Only occasionally pyrotechnics were ignited.

Iran has been rocked by violent protests for a month. They were triggered by the death of the young Kurd Mahsa Amini. The 22-year-old died in Tehran on September 16 after being arrested by the vice squad on charges of not wearing her headscarf in accordance with strict regulations.

The security authorities often use violence against the protests. According to human rights activists, more than 120 demonstrators have been killed since mid-September.
