With more than five million viewers, the cinema remake “The Perfect Secret” with Elyas M’Barek was one of the most successful films of 2019. During an evening together, seven friends put their mobile phones on the table – and promised to keep all incoming messages and Passing calls to others while eating.

In the new edition of the “Carolin Kebekus Show”, the comedienne used the setting as a template for a current sketch. Here are four friends who meet for dinner – and also put their cell phones on the dining table. Not to share indiscretions, but as a sign of nobleness. Because it’s the World Cup, and as an enlightened citizen it’s natural to boycott the tournament in the desert state. “Sorry, but there’s no helping anyone watching the World Cup, is there?” says the host played by Kebekus.

Apparently everyone agrees. The problem is that Germany is playing and the guests would actually like to know how the game is going. But the moral pressure is high: “Are you okay with the fact that thousands of workers died for your pleasure?” With this rigor, all guests are brought into line.

However, the game gets through the neighbors’ walls into the apartment of the four noble boycotters – and two of the four guests urgently need to go out on the balcony to smoke. From there you follow the game in the neighboring apartment – not without at the same time rising above the residents: “They just watch the game. You have to have so little backbone first of all.”

The game is omnipresent, the guests can hardly concentrate on the dinner. A friend immediately goes outside to smoke the next cigarette. Which leads to tension: “You were just smoking!” – “Are you my mother now, or what?”

But even with the hostess played by Kebekus, the façade shows cracks: “Where’s your sense of humanity gone – and why doesn’t anyone actually tell me how things are?”

The evening is still a success – because it is 3-0 for Germany. In the end, everyone sits happily in front of the TV and talks their way down: “The workers don’t come alive by not watching” – “But tomorrow we’ll boycott again: Uruguay is playing South Korea.”

With this number, Carolin Kebekus has convincingly traced the hypocrisy in many debates about football. It is only far off the mark in two points: not only that Germany won its game 3-0 is far from reality. And that Julian Brandt of all people is said to be the three-time goal scorer probably reveals more about the comedian’s preferences than about the World Cup.
