When worries weigh on the mood, Germans buy candles. The manufacturers’ association ECMA reported a big increase in sales in the pandemic and war years of 2021 and 2022. People also smoke a lot: German citizens smoked almost 66 billion cigarettes in 2022. And quite a few people seek comfort and warmth from the wood-burning stove: more than eleven million devices are in operation throughout Germany. All of these comforters need a match or lighter. One detonator requires trees to fall, the other requires gas and oil. The question is: Which is the better choice ecologically?
