The hostage-taker in the prison in Burg near Magdeburg is the right-wing extremist Halle assassin Stephan Balliet. The 30-year-old was injured in the hostage-taking that ended on Monday evening, the German press agency learned from security circles.
According to the Justice Department, Balliet had temporarily taken two employees into his power. He was eventually overpowered by other correctional officers inside the prison.
According to the Ministry of Justice, the prison in Burg, not far from Autobahn 2, has 637 places in closed prisons, and 18 places are also reserved for preventive detention.
