State media reported that rescuers from central China pulled a woman out of the rubble of a building that had collapsed six days ago.
The 10th survivor in the disaster in Changsha is an unidentified woman. At least five people died in the incident, and a number of others are still missing.
The official Xinhua News Agency reported that she was rescued just after midnight on Thursday. This occurred approximately 132 hours after the back of the six-story building collapsed on April 29.
Xinhua stated that the woman was conscious and had advised rescuers how to get her out safely. The search involved dogs, hand tools, drones, and electronic life detectors.
After being treated at a hospital, all survivors were reported to be in good health. Recent rain showers may have helped increase their survival chances without water or food.
In connection to the collapse, at least nine people were arrested including the owner. They are suspected of ignoring building codes and other violations.
Three people responsible for design and construction were also held, along with five other individuals who allegedly made a false safety assessment regarding a guesthouse on the fourth and sixth floors.
It also housed a residence, cafeteria and shops.
China’s President Xi Jinping called last month for more structural checks after a rise in self-built building collapses in recent years.
These disasters are often attributed to poor safety standards. This includes illegally adding extra floors or failing to use reinforcing bars. China’s infrastructure is also in disrepair, with gas pipes leaking into the ground. This has caused explosions and collapses.
