Some video surveillance cameras are keeping watch for the peace of the tomb of the philosopher Karl Marx in the cemetery of Highgate, in north London, after the last February, suffered two attacks of the hands of vandals. The Foundation of Karl Marx, who is the owner of the funeral monument, took the decision to install the devices after consulting with security experts and with Historic England, the government agency that oversees the architectural heritage of the country, as stated in the british newspaper The Guardian.

The cameras have been installed in two branches, one on each side of the tomb. This is the first time that recourse is had to a decision of this type in the cemetery, according to the association of Friends of the Cemetery of Highgate, and is expected to be sufficient to deter future assailants. The authors of the earlier attacks could not be identified or located.

Dating back to 1883 and belonged to the tomb’s original German philosopher and his wife, Jenny von Westphalen, a burial much more modest than the current monument, erected in 1954. In February, the vandals tried to destroy the name of the philosopher inscribed on the tomb, and less than two weeks later, in addition to hit it again the name, covered with painted the foundation on which rests the bust of the philosopher, with phrases like “doctrine of hatred” and “monument to the holocaust bolshevik”, the dates of 1917 and 1953, and the figure of “66.000.000 dead”.
The part in which is the tomb, the east, was inaugurated in 1860. According to the web page of the cemetery, where Karl Marx was buried the cemetery was private, but after a few years ceased to be profitable and was rescued by the association of Friends of the Cemetery of Highgate in 1981.
Although the grave of Marx is the most well-known cemetery of Highgate, the premises also houses the graves of the writer Mary Ann Cross, better known by her pseudonym, George Eliot, the writer Douglas Adams, author of hitchhiker’s guide, and the producer of the Sex Pistols, Malcolm McLaren.
