Robert Kubica puts in 2020 the challenge of the DTM. Because of his rally accident nine years ago, he had sustained severe injuries to the right Hand and on the right Arm needs to be adjusted as in the formula 1 may also be a DTM race car to his needs. But what did the BMW engineers, in order for Kubica in the M4 feels comfortable?
“There is an adjustment that we had to make all the cars that I drive: I use the rocker switch only with the left Hand,” says the Pole. “I also still have the Control for the brake balance from right to left to rebuild, because this makes the operation for me, more enjoyable.”
This is due to the fact that Kubica had to make in his recovery of the experience that his right Hand has the same motor skills as before the accident the case. Therefore, the 35-Year-old was left-handed: He now writes not only with the left Hand, but also makes the most important steps in the race car with the left.
Rockenfeller analyzed Kubica’s steering wheel operation
The Audi Pilot Mike rockenfeller was studied Onboard footage Kubica’s from the Nürburgring Test. “He switches up and down with the left Hand”, he analyzes his new rival to ‘ran.de’. “He moved the rocker switch in the one and in the other direction. To the front, he presses switch to high, to the rear, it pulls the switch to Off. We do that normally with the right and left.”
But not only was the DTM champion of the year 2013. “You see, of course, that the main work in the curves emanating from the left Hand. Therefore, it is very impressive how he does it and with what consistency and with what Speed. I would have also on the paper”, he warned against the KIND of-BMW-newbie to underestimate.
For the adjustment of the BMW steering wheel for Kubica, the engineers removed the rocker, the right shift, because of this Kubica needed anyway. In addition, some of the buttons have been programmed on the steering Wheel to the assignment to align your choice after Kubica’s. Unlike in formula 1 in the Williams, Kubica was not a completely new steering Wheel, the Layout is no different apart from the lack of rocker from the Original one.
“I’m never in the heat with roof”
But must make Kubica in other areas at a disadvantage? “The DTM cars are less tiring, because the g-forces are much lower than in formula 1,” says Kubica. “The body is less and the conditions require less, in terms of the centrifugal forces.”
However, there is one aspect, the means for Kubica uncharted territory: “I’ve never driven on a racetrack in the heat with the roof. I’ve always had a bit of air. Thus, it can be much hotter than in a formula car. This experience I will probably do, because we are also going in the hot Season, if not the hottest places in the world.”
But even this should be for the TYPE of-BMW-pilots not a big Problem: “The races are shorter than formula 1, so I am worried about the physical aspect, no Worries.”
