It didn’t work out again: The English national football team didn’t bring a trophy home from the 2022 World Cup either. In the quarter-finals it was against defending champions France. The Three Lions have been waiting for a title since 1966, when they won the World Cup on home soil.
However, national coach Gareth Southgate’s players will not come home empty-handed. Kyle Walker and John Stones brought a cat from Qatar. The animal was apparently roaming around near the English team’s World Cup base, and the Manchester City team-mates became friends with the cat – and decided to take it with them when they left.
They encountered the hangover on the first day in the quarters, Stones reported on the English Football Association’s social media channels. “He just showed up one day, so we just adopted him,” Walker says. “Every night he would sit and wait for his food.” The two defenders christened the cat Dave. Stones had actually planned to adopt him if the English team were to become world champions.
It’s a well-known fact that that won’t happen anymore, but Walker and Stones soon developed such a close relationship with the animal that they didn’t want to leave it behind in Qatar. “Some people don’t like him, but we love him,” explained Kyle Walker. Now the cat has to be in quarantine for nine weeks before it can move into its new home in Manchester. However, it is still unclear which of the two defenders Dave will actually live with in the future.
