Top striker Alexandra Popp has not yet decided whether she will play for the German women’s national soccer team at next year’s World Cup.
The tournament will take place in Australia and New Zealand from July 20 to August 20, 2023. “I’ll keep it open, but my plan at the moment is to play the World Cup. Let’s see what happens,” said Popp on Saturday evening on the ZDF show “Wetten, dass…”.
Popp was the face of the German squad on the way to the European Championship final this summer, which they narrowly lost to England, and contributed important goals. However, the 31-year-old had recently said that she had had the idea of ”ending the chapter” before the European Championships.
It is also questionable whether Giulia Gwinn can play for the DFB selection again after tearing her second cruciate ligament at the World Cup. “I’m in the best possible hands with my club,” said the 23-year-old full-back from FC Bayern Munich on Saturday evening. Gwinn had recently missed the two international matches in the USA. Popp was involved in both the 2-1 win and the 2-1 defeat that followed.
