Defending champion Emma Raducanu surprisingly failed in the first round at the US Open in New York. The British tennis player lost 6-3, 6-3 to French player Alizé Cornet in her opening match on Wednesday night. Raducanu (19) is only the third player to be eliminated in the first round a year after her title at the last Grand Slam tournament of the year. The other two were the Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova (2005) and Angelique Kerber (2017).
