Cross World Champion Mathieu van der Poel has won the 114th edition of the spring classic Milan-Sanremo.
After 294 kilometers, the Dutchman came out on top of Italian Filippo Ganna and Belgian Wout van Aert. Top favorite Tadej Pogacar had to settle for fourth place. German drivers played no role in the decision.
Van der Poel pulled away six kilometers from the finish on the Poggio descent and saved a few seconds ahead of the finish line. The classics specialist thus also managed to win at Milan-Sanremo 62 years after the triumph of his grandfather Raymond Poulidor.
