At the end of March, FC Bayern Munich still had good prospects in all three competitions. They were still in the DFB Cup and had reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League. And the record champions were also in a promising position in the Bundesliga – even though Bayern temporarily had to give up the lead in the table due to an unfortunate defeat in Leverkusen.
The Bayern bosses reacted promptly: they fired Julian Nagelsmann and hired Thomas Tuchel as coach. At first glance, the action seemed resolute: With Tuchel, an internationally experienced coach came to Säbener Straße, who can deal with stars and has already won the Champions League.
Four weeks later, the world looks very different for the Munich team, who are used to success: After leaving the DFB Cup and the Champions League, FCB can only win the championship this season. From the dream of the triple. But who is to blame?
According to a Forsa survey commissioned by RTL/ntv, the majority of respondents who describe themselves as interested in football see a clear scapegoat for the misery: Hasan Salihamidžić. 66 percent support the dismissal of the sports director. 46 percent hold the CEO Oliver Kahn responsible and call for his dismissal.
Very few see the mistake in the new coach: Only eight percent would fire Thomas Tuchel again after the short time – although his record looks anything but successful.
The opinion is more differentiated if you ask all Germans, not just those interested in football: In the total population, only 26 percent think that FC Bayern should fire someone after they have been eliminated from the two competitions.
This is not a clear vote for personal consequences. In general, FC Bayern is likely to get away with a black eye this season: 61 percent of those interested in football are convinced that the record champions will hold up the trophy again this season.
