RB Salzburg speaks a word of power: Christoph Freund will not switch to Chelsea!
Last weekend, Christoph Freund agreed with Chelsea FC to take over the post of sports director at the Blues. Those responsible at RB Salzburg then said that the Londoners had not contacted them and that they assumed the 45-year-old would be whereabouts.
Sources then confirmed to 90min that Chelsea were still expecting a change in sporting director – the Austrians’ statements were therefore interpreted on the island in order to drive up the transfer fee.
How serious Salzburg was, however, became clear on Tuesday evening: “The extensive media and public speculation of the last few days has prompted us to make the following statement: Christoph Freund is and will remain sporting director of FC Red Bull Salzburg, there is no move to Chelsea “It says in a statement from the top Austrian club.
“As I have already confirmed in interviews, Chelsea FC was interested in me. When such a big club asks, it not only honors me and the work of FC Red Bull Salzburg, it is of course also a circumstance that reflects personal considerations entails,” confirmed Freund. “But I’ve come to the conclusion that FC Red Bull Salzburg is the best place for me and a move is out of the question for me.”
Salzburg’s managing director Stephan Reiter added: “Christoph Freund has been doing excellent work for us for many years and only recently extended his contract until 2026. I can hereby confirm that he will remain sporting director of FC Red Bull Salzburg. Of course he has informed me about Chelsea FC’s interest in him and we exchanged ideas on a personal level and in good conversations. The fact is that he will remain our sporting director!”
