The German Nordic combined athlete Julian Schmid won the silver medal at the World Championships in Planica, Slovenia, and thus secured the fourth medal for the German team. When the Norwegian Jarl Magnus Riiber won on Saturday, the 23-year-old from Oberstdorf took second place, 19 seconds behind.
The podium after a normal hill jump and the ten-kilometer run was completed by Franz-Josef Rehrl from Austria as third. Schmid, who is Germany’s best combined athlete this winter, created the basis for his first major individual medal with a strong jump. Olympic champion Vinzenz Geiger took fourth place. He had recently been struggling with an infection for a long time.
The longtime dominator Riiber has conquered gold in this discipline for the third time. Most recently, however, the 25-year-old had to cope with major health problems and private strokes of fate, which is why he paused several times in the World Cup. Behind roommates Schmid and Geiger, Manuel Faißt was fifth and Eric Frenzel was tenth. On Sunday (10.00 a.m. and 3.30 p.m.) the mixed World Championships, in which two men and two women will start, will be on the program for the first time.
