Mats Hummels and Leon Goretzka were unable to take part in the national soccer team’s first team training session on the DFB campus after their injuries.
Hummels completed a running session because of his back pain, Goretzka practiced individually because of his muscular problems, as the DFB announced. Stuttgart’s Chris Führich (25), who did not travel to Frankfurt due to cold symptoms, had to cancel the upcoming international matches against Turkey on Saturday in Berlin and three days later in Vienna against Austria.
In his first training session in Germany as national coach, Julian Nagelsmann had 23 players on the pitch and 25 players in his squad. In October, the DFB selection traveled directly to the USA for the debut of the new head coach. A few selected fans and DFB employees were able to follow the session on the academy grounds, which was also open to the media. Nagelsmann had announced that he would primarily focus on defensive tactical matters during training for the last two European Championship tests this year.
It was still unclear whether Dortmund central defender Hummels (34) and Bayern professional Goretzka (28) would be fit for action until the Turkey game. Hummels said on Monday that he needed two to three more days to cure the problems.
