Fourth in the World Cup Morocco is applying together with Spain and Portugal to host the 2030 World Cup. This was announced by King Mohammed VI. according to the Moroccan association in Rwanda’s capital Kigali.

The two European countries originally announced in October last year that they wanted to apply for the tournament together with Ukraine. The Spanish association initially did not confirm the joint candidacy. The association said the three countries would meet in Rwanda before announcing any changes to the bid.

“This candidacy, unique in the history of football, is one of the links: between Africa and Europe, between the north and south of the Mediterranean and between the African and Arab worlds and the Euro-Mediterranean,” explained the king. His message was read at a meeting of African associations in Kigali. The congress of the world association FIFA will take place there on Thursday.

A decision should be made in the coming year

Morocco had also applied to host the 2026 World Cup, which was then awarded to the United States, Canada and Mexico. The North African country hosted the Club World Cup this year. At the World Cup in Qatar last year, Morocco became the first African team to reach the semi-finals, where they lost to France.

The decision on the host of the 2030 World Cup should be made in the coming year. The four South American countries Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay have already officially announced their candidacy. The governments of Bulgaria and Greece had already announced a joint application with Romania and Serbia in 2018. Saudi Arabia is also considered interested in hosting the tournament in a good seven years.
