Inter Milan has won the Italian football championship for the 20th time. Coach Simone Inzaghi’s team won 2-1 (1-0) in the city derby against AC Milan. Inter have a lead of 17 points with five games left and can no longer be caught by second-placed AC Milan.
“We would love to win the Scudetto in the derby,” Inter coach Inzaghi said before kick-off. After the triumph, Inter captain Lautaro Martinez couldn’t hold back tears of joy: “We suffered a lot. We worked hard for it. What can I say: This is the best thing in my footballing life,” said the Argentine on DAZN and praised him Team: “This is a super team.”
Hectic final phase with three red cards
The 2023 Champions League finalist had no problems winning the championship for a long time. 36-year-old Francesco Acerbi paved the way for Inter with his opening goal in the 18th minute. Former Gladbach player Marcus Thuram (49th) took what was actually a reassuring lead with his twelfth Serie A goal of the season – until Fikayo Tomori (80th) scored the next goal for the home team.
In the hectic final phase with a total of three red cards, the guests extended their lead over time. Inter have now won the second star on their jersey – in Italy there is one star for every ten championships.
The new champions’ starting line-up included two former Bayern professionals: Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer and Frenchman Benjamin Pavard. The head of the team is the former Leverkusen player Hakan Calhanoglu – the 30-year-old Turkish international shone as a game designer. Thuram and former Dortmund player Henrich Mchitarjan also played well. The former captain of the German U21 national team Yann Aurel Bisseck was on the bench in the Derby della Madonnina.
