Jurgen Klopp is only doing moderately in the current Premier League season. Liverpool FC, runners-up and Champions League finalist, started the season poorly. The results are better now, but after the last four wins in a row, they continued to lose to FC Brent in their most recent game. Klopp and his team are currently in sixth place in the table.

So there is a crisis, the team is struggling with injury worries. Rumors quickly surfaced that Klopp might be tired of office in his eighth year with the Reds. His commitments at Borussia Dortmund and 1. FSV Mainz each lasted seven years, and then it was over each time.

So it stands to reason that Klopp is repeatedly traded as a possible successor to national coach Hansi Flick. He may continue in his own country until the European Championships in 2024, but what happens after that is open. In an interview with “Sport Bild”, Klopp has not ruled out the job as national coach for the future.

“I’ve said it before: It’s not entirely out of the question that I’ll become national coach at some point. But it has to fit. And so far it hasn’t,” he said. “I don’t want to give the impression that it’s the last job I want to do. There are worse things than being named as a possible national coach,” said Klopp. At the moment, however, he is at Liverpool FC.

According to his own information, he would not be ready until 2027. The contract with Liverpool FC runs until mid-2026. “And if I end the contract in Liverpool, then nothing will definitely be done for a year. After that, we’ll see,” said Klopp. He is an “extremely responsible person,” said the former Bundesliga coach. So he couldn’t just say in Liverpool: “I’m out of here now.”

Klopp thinks the current national coach Flick is the right choice. Flick took the right players with him for the World Cup in Qatar. However, there are “not that many alternatives in some positions” in the national team. Therefore, in the future it will be about “making as many great players as possible available to the national team,” said Klopp. Then Flick has to make the right decisions. “And I’m sure that Hansi will do really well,” said Klopp.

Klopp does not want to dramatize the poor performance of the national team at the World Cup in Qatar. “Overall, it wasn’t so much the performance in the three games that was disappointing, it was mostly okay, but the result. But would we have been world champions in the end? Probably not!” He sees the main problem in training, because in some positions (full-back, center forward) the selection of good players is too small. “It starts with training: We can only reap what is sown below. You have to ask the question: Why don’t we have more alternatives?” Something has to change,” said Klopp.
