In the race for a European Championship ticket, Switzerland barely averted embarrassment in a spectacular game. Thanks to a double strike shortly before the end, the Swiss still managed a 3:3 (1:0) against Belarus.
Former Bundesliga professional Xherdan Shaqiri (28th minute) initially gave Switzerland the lead in St. Gallen. But then Maks Ebong (61st), Denis Polyakov (69th) and Dmitri Antilevski (84th) turned the game around for the outsiders. Ex-Dortmunder Manuel Akanji (89th) and Zeki Amdouni (90th) saved the Swiss from the draw. Despite the setback, the Swiss still have the European Championship ticket in their own hands.
Leverkusen’s Granit Xhaka played his 118th international match against Belarus, equaling the record set by the previous Swiss record player Heinz Hermann.
