Union Berlin midfielder Morten Thorsby wants to build on a previous performance at European level in the first leg of the Europa League round of 16 after difficult months.
“The Ajax game was a very positive experience. It was my best game so far,” said the 26-year-old Norwegian before the game against Belgian top club Royale Union Saint-Gilloise on Thursday (6:45 p.m. / RTL). “I showed who I am and what I can give the team. And of course I want to show that a lot more.”
Thorsby played for the first time this season for ninety minutes in the first leg of the second round at Ajax Amsterdam (0-0) and put in a strong performance. “It was a good comeback after everything that happened. It’s the level I always want to play at.”
Back after surgery “old strength”.
The central midfielder moved to Berlin from the Italian club Sampdoria Genoa last summer, but was unable to play permanently in Union’s first eleven. This mainly had to do with health problems, which are now a thing of the past after a stomach operation. “I had some difficulties and then the surgery in January. I wished for more but luckily I’m back now,” said Thorsby. “I feel like I’m back to my old strength. It’s going in the right direction.”
Coach Urs Fischer was also pleased with the Norwegian’s form. “Now his mind is clear again. You can see that in training,” said the Swiss. “He’s on a very good path.” However, he left open whether Thorsby would start against Saint-Gilloise.
