Borussia Mönchengladbach made it into the second round of the DFB Cup without any problems.
In the first competitive game under the new coach Gerardo Seoane, the Bundesliga soccer team clearly won 7-0 (4-0) against fifth-division side TuS Bersenbrück. In front of 15,741 spectators in Osnabrück, including around 10,000 guest fans, the two newcomers Franck Honorat (22nd minute/56th) and Tomas Cvancara (32nd/35th), the very agile Nathan Ngoumou (27th), met Robin Hack (77th) and Grant-Leon Ranos (89th) for the three-time cup winner.
First division relegated FC Schalke 04 advanced with a 3-1 (2-1) win at second division competitor Eintracht Braunschweig. Kenan Karaman (19th minute), Paul Seguin (42nd) and Danny Latza (90th 4) scored after Anthony Ujah (12th) took the lead from Braunschweig. Eintracht professional Sebastian Griesbeck (90.2) and Schalke’s Lino Tempelmann (90.6) each saw the yellow-red card in overtime.
Hanover loses on penalties
Meanwhile, the two second division clubs Hannover 96 and Karlsruher SC are already out. Hannover deservedly lost 4-2 on penalties at third-division side SV Sandhausen and are still without a win in the new season after three competitive games. After a game that was wild at times, Abu-Bekir El-Zein converted the decisive penalty for the hosts and gave the Lower Saxony team an embarrassing end in the first round. After regulation time and overtime the score was 3:3 (3:3, 1:2). In extra time, Sandhausen was the better team for a long time in the heat, but failed to score and finally won on penalties.
It was also over for KSC against a third division team: 1. FC Saarbrücken won 2-1 (0-0). Striker Kai Brünker, who came on at half-time, scored the winning goal for the host in the first minute of added time. Tim Civeja (47th minute) put the Saarlanders ahead in the Ludwigsparkstadion. Former Gladbach captain Lars Stindl (65th) scored to equalize in the meantime (65th).
