The end of goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi’s suffering also pleased RB Leipzig coach Marco Rose.
“It was a special moment for him. We are happy for him that he is back after a difficult time with setbacks during the injury,” said Rose after the 33-year-old’s comeback. The Hungarian was back between the posts in the 3-2 victory in the first round of the DFB Cup against second division soccer team SV Wehen Wiesbaden.
Long period of suffering
Almost a year ago, Gulacsi tore his cruciate ligament and has been fighting to return to goal ever since. In Hesse’s state capital the time had finally come. “I’m very happy and proud that I achieved this. That’s not something to be taken for granted,” he said. “He was very emotional, even after the game in the dressing room,” reported Rose. “You can see how much he missed that.”
Although Gulacsi’s lack of match practice was noticeable, he was immediately one of the pillars of the team again. “Although he got two stalls, he was there in one or two tricky situations. It was a good first step back to his old strength,” Rose praised the goalkeeper. In the top Bundesliga game against Bayern Munich next Saturday, Gulacsi will make room for Janis Blaswich again. “I still have to take several steps,” said the RB captain.
