In the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup there is a real cracker. Defending champion RB Leipzig and coach Marco Rose meet his former club Borussia Dortmund.
The Saxons will host the Westphalians in the match on April 4th or 5th. In addition, record cup winners FC Bayern Munich welcome SC Freiburg, finalists from last season. That was the result of the draw in the German Football Museum in Dortmund. National player Jacqueline Meißner from SGS Essen drew the lot.
“It’s great that it worked out for our fans with a home game,” said Rose, adding: “Personally, I’m looking forward to meeting old friends, even if you’d rather only meet Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals or final.” The 46-year-old coached BVB from July 2021 to May 2022.
For FC Bayern it is the second meeting with Freiburg in the cup. In 2005, the Munich team beat the Breisgauers 7-0 in the quarter-finals.
Eintracht Frankfurt welcomes Union Berlin
Eintracht Frankfurt faces 1. FC Union Berlin. Union professional Timo Baumgartl said: “We would have liked to have had a home game. But we accept it. A quarter-final is there to be won.”
1. FC Nürnberg is the only remaining second division team to play against VfB Stuttgart. “We haven’t had ideal opponents in the quarter-finals for a long time,” commented VfB sporting director Fabian Wohlgemuth. “Nürnberg didn’t fight their way so far in this competition to leave us the field without resistance.”
The semi-finals are scheduled for May 2nd and 3rd, with the final taking place on June 3rd in Berlin’s Olympic Stadium.
