Red Bull Salzburg assume that Christoph Freund will stay with the club – even though the 45-year-old has agreed to become the new sporting director of Chelsea.
Chelsea have seen significant changes at all levels following Todd Boehly’s takeover. Former executives Marina Granovskaia and Petr Cech left the club at the start of the summer, while head coach Thomas Tuchel was sacked in early September.
Boehly himself acted as interim sporting director but it looked like there might be longer-term progress as sources confirmed to 90min an agreement has been reached with Freund to fill the vital role.
Salzburg have now zeroed in on Freund and claim to have had no contact with Chelsea, although Freund himself was in contact with the Blues.
“FC Red Bull Salzburg have never been contacted by Chelsea to discuss Christoph Freund’s transfer details. We assume he will stay,” said a statement obtained by journalist Ben Jacobs.
In an interview with Sky Sport Austria, Salzburg’s managing director Stephan Reiter said: “I can definitely rule that out. Neither Chelsea nor Christoph Freund spoke to me or the club management about anything like that. Christoph recently signed a contract with us until 2026, which is for him the same applies to players, managers or coaches.”
After 90min information, Freund is still facing a move to Stamford Bridge – Salzburg would like to see a considerable transfer fee.
