After the violent 1:5 in the Bundesliga, FC Bayern Munich is aiming for an immediate reaction in the Champions League.
“It’s about showing a different face on Tuesday,” said national player Leon Goretzka on ZDF. After the defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt, the Munich team will be guests at Manchester United in the premier class on Tuesday. While Bayern are already group winners and in the round of 16, the English record champions are threatened with an exit in the group phase.
Frustration ran deep
The frustration among the people of Munich was deep after the weekend’s Bundesliga defeat. “That’s the beauty of football, that it continues on Tuesday to show a reaction to the game,” said Goretzka. Especially against such an opponent. “These are really big games, historic duels. We want to show right away that it was a slip-up,” said Goretzka. Manchester also failed in the dress rehearsal for the illustrious Bayern game by losing 3-0 to AFC Bournemouth.
Two days after the defeat in Frankfurt, Bayern travel to Great Britain. “We will now react to it and set an example,” announced sports director Christoph Freund on Sport1. “We were on the right track. The game against Frankfurt was of course nothing and bitter. But we have played very successfully in the last few weeks and had one of the best starts to the season in the league in recent years.”
Müller: Heroic deeds in the spring
The draw for the round of 16 will take place next Monday. Whether Manchester will still be there doesn’t just depend on their own play. Former Bayern amateur coach Erik ten Hag’s team doesn’t just need a win of their own. They also have to hope for a draw between FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray Istanbul.
The Munich team won the first four games of the group stage this season, most recently a 0-0 draw against Copenhagen. “We will end the Champions League year with a clean performance. The heroic deeds will then take place in the spring,” announced Thomas Müller.
