RB Leipzig has surprisingly parted ways with sports director Max Eberl. The 50-year-old has been released with immediate effect and sports director Rouven Schröder will take over the sporting management, the cup winner announced a day before the top game against FC Bayern Munich.
The Saxons accused him of a lack of commitment to Leipzig. “The lack of commitment to the club has led us to make this decision. This is completely independent of the squad change and the sporting results,” the RB statement continued.
Eberl was recently again linked in the media with a possible move to FC Bayern. In view of these speculations, he referred this week to his contract with the cup winners and emphasized that it was not about him, but about the duel with Munich.
Eberl only took up his position in Leipzig last December after resigning from Borussia Mönchengladbach in January 2022, citing his own exhaustion. The 50-year-old has already been considered a candidate for FC Bayern several times in the past. According to the club, he had a “long-term contract” in Leipzig.
In July, the Munich team hired Christoph Freund as sports director, effectively the successor to sports director Hasan Salihamidzic. Eberl began his active football career at FC Bayern.
