The footballers of FC Bayern Munich have pushed VfL Wolfsburg off the top of the table and taken a big step towards the championship. The team from the Isar defeated the women from Lower Saxony deservedly 1:0 (0:0) and is now leading the league by one point.
Georgia Stanway (84th) decided the intense game with a converted hand penalty. VfL still have six matchdays to regain the top position and successfully defend their title in the Bundesliga.
In front of 2500 spectators, the Munich women developed a clear chance. National goalkeeper Merle Frohms initially kept the Wolfsburg women in the game. First the keeper parried a long-range shot from Stanway (18′), then she deflected a header from Sydney Lohmann (31′) to the bottom edge of the crossbar – Wolfsburg’s Dominique Janssen then cleared the ball on the goal line. Lower Saxony kept looking for relief for the defensive, but the hosts made the spaces extremely narrow from the center line. Bayern could have been in the lead at half-time.
After the change of sides, the Munich team continued to push for the lead. Sometimes Lina Magull (47th) failed on the crossbar, sometimes Frohms reacted brilliantly. Alexandra Popp had the only big chance in Wolfsburg until the 60th minute. The captain of the DFB-Elf put the ball over the goal, but shook her team with the action. In the final phase, a more open game developed. When everything pointed to a draw, Stanway redeemed Bayern and raised hopes of a fifth league title in the club’s history.
