Brazil are eliminated from the 2022 World Cup after losing to 2018 runners-up Croatia on penalties in the quarter-finals.
The Selecao traveled to Qatar as one of the tournament favorites in search of their first title since 2002 and their sixth overall. In the group stage, coach Tite’s side recorded back-to-back wins against Serbia and Switzerland before suffering a surprise defeat to Cameroon.
They managed a 4-1 win over South Korea in the round of 16 and it looked like the Selecao would advance to the semi-finals for the first time since 2014 when Neymar scored the opener midway through extra time against Croatia.
But Croatia equalized and then prevailed 4-2 on penalties after mistakes by Rodrygo and Marquinhos. Neymar didn’t even get a chance in the penalty shootout.
By 2026, Brazil will now have to wait at least 24 years for a World Cup title, as long as between triumphs in 1970 and 1994.
