Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has been awarded the Yashin Trophy for his outstanding performances in the 2021/22 season.

After failing to match the performances of his time at Atletico Madrid and Chelsea following his move to the Santiago Bernabeu in 2018, Courtois finally showed himself to be in top form again last season, winning La Liga and the Champions League.

The Champions League final in May culminated in a series of incredible saves in Los Blancos’ 1-0 win over Liverpool at the Stade de France. Courtois was voted player of the match for his performance.

Courtois is the third winner of the award, which was made for the first time in 2019 after Alisson received the first prize. After France Football scrapped the Ballon d’Or award in 2020, it was reinstated in 2021 and Gianluigi Donnarumma received the Yashin trophy.

While Courtois officially receives the award for the first time, the RSSSF retrospectively explained that he would have won in 2018 as he received the highest score in the Ballon d’Or voting.

Courtois has carried his good form from last season into the current season. Real Madrid are still unbeaten this season and have a good chance of at least defending the La Liga title.
