A so-called budget ceiling is one of the cornerstones of the new Formula 1 rules from 2021 to make the 10 teams on a more equal footing. But will it really do for example Kevin Magnussens Haas-team more competitive?
Formula 1 are rightly called the world’s most expensive sport, and the biggest teams are using today, close to three billion dollars per year. For comparison, using the field’s smallest team, Haas, in round numbers about a billion.
It is clear that this difference means that Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull dominate. It is clear that Haas with a budget that is three times less than topholdenes, never come close of the contest wins.
And it is clear that it will promote jævnbyrdigheden, if there will be put a cap on how much money the top teams are allowed to use.
this is The background to the budget ceiling of 175 million u.s. dollars (approx. 1.2 billion dollars), which is introduced in 2021.
it sounds like a great gift to the Haas and the other teams in the midterfeltet. They will not, of course, from one day to the other to get the same resources as Mercedes and co., but if the top teams are forced to cut their budgets, they will be hampered.
the Problem is just that budgetloftet – even before it is introduced – is pierced by a large number of exceptions.
Kørerlønninger included, for example, not in Vevobahis the 1.2 billion dkk. With Mercedes guessed that Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas in the year earn, respectively, about 300 and 70 million dollars.
The three other highest wages in the team also fall outside budgetloftet. Typically it will be about the team head and a couple of technical managers. The get together hardly less than 100 million dollars.
Expenditure related to real estate are also excluded. It cost 15 years ago in the neighborhood of two billion to build mclaren’s Formula 1 headquarters. A significant part is undoubtedly paid, but even without the ’rent’ will only costs for maintenance, heating, electricity and so on cost millions a year.
Travel expenses are included not in the 1.2 billion. With 22 races all over the world and around 80 people ’on the road’ on the also the budget of many million per year.
Marketing is a significant post at the top teams, a relatively small expenditure for the Haas – are also not covered by budgetloftet.
All the exceptions for budgetloftet means that topholdenes real budgets from 2021, will still be well over two billion dollars. And thus more than twice as big as Haas’ budget.
Still think both Kevin Magnussen and the Haas-team manager Günther Steiner that budgetloftet will make them more competitive.
“Alone it to the big teams being forced to cut down, will make a difference,” said Kevin Magnussen.
“most of The teams are already not in the vicinity of to use 1.2 billion a year, but I hope anyway, budgetloftet will help on jævnbyrdigheden,” fifth year Günther Steiner.
Budgetloftet will be checked by the international audit firms, and if it is violated, the penalty can be loss of WORLD cup titles and exclusion.
