Didier Deschamps announced on French television on Sunday that he will not nominate a player for the World Cup squad after Karim Benzema’s injury-related departure.

The French will therefore go into the tournament with 25 instead of the 26 players allowed, although Deschamps would have had other top-class offensive players such as Moussa Diaby and Wissam Ben Yedder at their disposal.

The decision is somehow understandable, however, as Deschamps still has plenty of forward center options to choose from in the squad. They include Olivier Giroud, Marcus Thuram, Randal Kolo Muani and Kylian Mbappé.
