Mats Hummels is important for BVB – on and off the pitch. He remains a key player for coach Edin Terzic. The veteran’s contract expires next summer. On the trip to Asia, the 33-year-old commented on the current state of affairs.
Instead of the World Cup in Qatar, Mats Hummel’s trip to Asia with BVB is up to date. The 33-year-old had to cope with one of the most disappointing moments of his career by not being nominated, as he himself explained.
Unlike the DFB, things are going much better for Hummels at BVB. After a not particularly strong pre-season, the veteran was in top form again in the first half and presented himself with many strong performances.
“Mats is one of our key players because of his success and experience, but also because of his performances this season,” explained coach Edin Terzic (via Ruhr News). One thing is clear: Hummels is important for Black and Yellow – despite the much-noticed transfers from Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck.
Not just because of his achievements. But also because he is an important communicator for Terzic. Someone who likes to put his fingers in the wound. Colleagues may not have liked his public criticism of the team, but it should be a wake-up call. Borussia was too inconsistent again in the current season.
Terzic did not want to see the public Hummels criticism in the Sportbild conversation negative anyway. “He also expresses his external criticism internally. And what is much more important: he does it internally before he appears in front of the cameras. It’s about not pointing fingers at each other, but raising our arms and taking responsibility . And Mats is an extremely important part of this team,” explained the BVB coach.
Terzic did not talk to the 33-year-old about Hummels’ expiring contract – and will not comment publicly either. With his performances, however, there seems to be a lot to suggest that Hummels will extend his working paper again beyond the summer of 2023.
Hummels himself was also cautious on the subject on the Asia trip: “I’m very happy with the situation right now, I’m fit and I’m not in any pain. I can concentrate on football and I enjoy it very, very much,” emphasized he. Everything else “will not be decided now or in the next few weeks, but next year.” According to Hummels, there should not yet be a time for contract talks and it has not yet been discussed with the sporting management around Sebastian Kehl.
