The Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov has described the previous EU plans for new ammunition deliveries to his country as insufficient.
Ukraine needs a million artillery shells and probably around four billion euros would have to be made available for this, Resnikov said today at an informal meeting with the defense ministers of the EU states in Sweden. It is about being able to launch further counter-offensives against the attackers from Russia.
In a discussion paper for the meeting of defense ministers near Stockholm, the EU Commission and EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell had previously proposed making an additional billion euros available for ammunition supplies to Ukraine. The money is to come from the so-called European Peace Facility. It is a financing instrument through which the EU already supplies arms and equipment and supports the training of the Ukrainian armed forces.
90,000 to 100,000 bullets per month
Resnikov today described the amount of one billion euros as “not enough”. He pointed out that his country needs 90,000 to 100,000 shells a month.
Decisions on further action by the EU are expected in the second half of March. Then there are regular meetings of foreign and defense ministers and heads of state and government in Brussels.
